About The Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus

Our Mission

Chorus

The mission of the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus is to entertain, educate, and connect audiences and members through music that is distinguished for its creativity, diversity and artistic excellence.

Artistic Vision

The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus aspires to be recognized not only as one of the finest male choral ensembles on the globe, but also as a leader in the realm of social change and the betterment of all people. These goals are evidenced by the presentation of empowering performances in the Atlanta community, the state of Georgia, the Southeastern U.S. and countries abroad, where it will present the finest of musical performances and deliver powerful messages of equality for humankind.

By establishing a highly-effective infrastructure that empowers, emboldens, and illuminates the talent, skill, and diversity of its membership, the chorus strives to create a unique and collaborative working environment among its members, demonstrating how people of different ethnicities, religions, education, and belief systems can come together to create a safe, embracing, and productive community for all.

Sharing a love of music, the joy of performing, and a commitment to excellence in the community are the chief objectives of the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. Through this artistic vision, the chorus strives not only to change the way people think about gay men, but how they may think of diverse people in all parts of the world.

History

29 Years of the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus

In 1981, a time when the gay-rights movement was just gaining momentum, founding artistic director Jeffrey McIntyre and 45 talented and brave singers came together to form something quite new, especially in the South — a singing group where members would be proud not only of the quality of what they were singing, but of the positive image and message they were portraying.

For over a quarter of a century, the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus has been a voice for diversity and inclusiveness, presenting high-quality musical entertainment that positively represents the gay community while serving the entire community at large.

Through the years, the AGMC’s volunteer members have been privileged to share the stage with such notables as Leslie Jordan, former poet laureate Maya Angelou, The Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Ballet, Turtle Creek Chorale, the International Gay Men’s Chorus of Paris, and many more. The AGMC and its select ensemble, Panache, have been proud to perform at benefits for victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, for charitable organizations such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Food Bank, and AIDS Athens, and for community service events such as First Night Atlanta, AIDS Walk Atlanta, the Human Rights Campaign Annual Dinner, Toys for Tots and The Toy Party.

The Chorus has frequently appeared at premier performing arts venues such as the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Hall, the Cathedral of St. Philip, the Robert Ferst Center for the Performing Arts, the Atlanta Civic Center, Emory University, Agnes Scott College and — as part of the Chorus’ 2007-08 season — the Alliance Theatre of the Woodruff Arts Center and the new, world-class Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre during the Centre's inaugural year.

One of the world’s longest-running gay choruses, the AGMC has a well-earned reputation for musical leadership and excellence. It is a member of the international Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA), and it actively participates in collaborative performances and educational efforts with their member choruses worldwide. The AGMC is also a member of Chorus America, an organization dedicated to the expansion of the choral movement in North America.

Today, the 120-plus chorus members, staff, and the all-volunteer board of directors are proud to advance our mission by providing socially-signifcant entertainment for our ever-growing audiences.

Community Performances

In addition to our season schedule of three major concerts, the AGMC performs at special events throughout the year. Due to logistic and artistic concerns, the full chorus is available for booking only in venues that can accommodate the group’s size and sound requirements.

Panache, our small choral ensemble, represents the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus at receptions, private parties, conventions, and community events where it is impractical for the full chorus to appear. Panache makes dozens of crowd-pleasing appearances throughout the year.  Their repertoire includes a variety of classical, pop, show-tune, specialty and GLBT-oriented selections.

To request the full chorus or Panache to perform for your special event, contact the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus at 404-320-1030. Or complete the Performance Request Form and return to the Chorus office via mail or fax to 404-320-5204.
