Singing Membership

Auditions

AGMC has developed a reputation for holding "the most comfortable" of auditions. (Don't be intimidated by our artistic director or his resume -- or by the music leaders who sit in on the audition. They all want you to do well!) Please read the column on the right in its entirety before considering membership in the chorus.

Basic Membership Information

Rehearsals are held most Thursday evenings from 7:30-10:00 pm. Additional rehearsals are usually scheduled during the week preceding each concert. The AGMC performs three concerts each season, and may make additional appearances throughout the year. Membership dues for the full year are required, but scholarships are available based on need. For more information on becoming a member, read the column to the right and download our Prospective Member Overview.

Fifth Section

You may help the chorus by becoming a member of our Fifth Section at any time. To work behind the scenes, assist in rehearsal or to help at concert time, please contact us at (404) 320-1030.

Becoming a singing member of the AGMC

The Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus is committed to a standard of excellence in singing. While the AGMC seeks to maintain a body of singers with good vocal training, the ability to read music, and a background in choral singing, there is room for those with less experience. However, these members must possess basic fundamentals that allow them to contribute vocally. The opportunity to demonstrate these skills takes place in an audition and include:

  • A pleasant voice in good vocal health.
  • A strong sense of pitch and rhythm.
  • The ability to blend well with other voices and follow direction.
  • The ability to learn music quickly.

Additionally, members must also meet the following requirements:

  • The ability and time to work on the music outside of rehearsal and to perform it from memory. (Rehearsal recordings are usually provided to assist in this area.)
  • A willingness to participate in the chorus' unique series of warm-up exercises (led by the vocal coach at the start of each rehearsal) and to apply that work to the various styles of music the chorus rehearses and performs.
  • A congenial demeanor, a sense of cooperation, and the willingness to work for the highest possible standard.

If you feel you meet these requirements and are interested in becoming a member of the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus, we invite you to audition. Create the best environment for a successful audition by following the steps below (click on each red bar).

Even if you have been to chorus performances, listen to all four recordings on our multimedia page in their entirety before scheduling your audition.

This PDF contains all the information you need to begin the process, including a prospective member overview, membership application, and how to prepare for your audition.

Once you have completed steps 1 and 2, contact Membership President Michael McKinney to schedule an audition.

Upcoming Audition Dates

The next round of auditions for the AGMC will be in August. Please check back for more details.
